eVisa (Electronic Visa)

Japan launched its electronic visa (eVisa) system to streamline the tourist visa application process for eligible nationalities. The eVisa allows applicants to submit their visa application online through the official Visit Japan Web portal or the Japanese eVisa system, reducing the need for in-person visits to embassies and consulates. The eVisa is specifically for short-term stays for tourism purposes and produces an electronic visa that is linked to your passport.

Duration

Up to 30 days (single entry), though specific duration depends on nationality

Cost

Approximately ¥3,000 ($20 USD) for single entry, paid online. Fees may vary by nationality. Some processing fees from the portal may apply additionally.

Processing Time

Typically 5-7 business days from submission of a complete application. Processing may take longer during peak travel periods. Applicants are advised to apply at least 2-3 weeks before their planned departure date.

Eligibility

Currently available to nationals of select countries including China, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and others — the list of eligible nationalities is being gradually expanded. Applicants must be applying for a short-term tourism visa (not business, study, or work). The eVisa is intended for individual tourists, not group tours. Applicants must have a valid email address and the ability to upload digital copies of required documents.

Requirements

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity
  • Digital passport-sized photograph meeting specified dimensions and format requirements
  • Valid email address for account registration and communication
  • Credit or debit card for online fee payment
  • Round-trip flight booking or itinerary
  • Accommodation details for the stay in Japan
  • Travel itinerary with planned activities
  • Proof of sufficient financial means (digital copies of bank statements)
  • Additional documents as required based on nationality

9

Upon arrival, present your passport, printed eVisa, and completed arrival card to immigration officers

Important Notes

  • The eVisa system is relatively new and the list of eligible nationalities changes — always check the latest information on the official MOFA website
  • An eVisa is electronically linked to your passport — if you get a new passport after receiving the eVisa, you must reapply
  • Print a copy of your eVisa confirmation as a backup, even though it is electronically linked to your passport
  • The eVisa is for tourism only — it does not permit work, paid activities, or extended stays
  • If your nationality is not yet eligible for eVisa, you must apply through the traditional embassy/consulate process
  • Ensure all uploaded documents are clear, legible, and in the correct format to avoid processing delays
  • The eVisa does not replace the need to complete Visit Japan Web registration for customs and immigration upon arrival
